Preliminary Round Webb Eliis Cup

Despite the torrential down poor of the morning the grounds staff worked hard to ensure that the Memorial Ground was fit to host the preliminary round of the Webb Ellis Cup 2011/12- The Wands were drawn to play Crymych RFC from the Scarlet’s region. This was the first step along the road to defend the title won for the last two years

The Wands won the encounter 31-3.  Well-done to all players for the spirit in which the game was played a credit to both clubs. On the day the Wands Pack dominated the set piece and the pace of the backs combined with some deft handling skills lead to two trys from the forwards with man of the match Tyler O’Connell scoring the first followed by rampaging 8 Jose Kabila scoring under the post. The backs were not to be outdone with two excellent team try’s from the flyer Rhys Allin and his opposite wing Matt Roberts all converted by Josh Hurley who secured the win with a converted penalty.

Llangennech RFC (Scarlet’s Champions) V GWRFC Youth (Blues Champions)

Well what a game – if it had been written for TV or Film it would have been dubbed too farfetched. Llangennech flew out of the starting blocks and put pressure on the Wands who conceded two soft try’s and a conversions within minutes,  Josh Hurley got a try and conversion back. Llan they get a penalty close to the posts followed by another try and conversion. Dan Crimmins gets a great forwards try followed by a conversion from Josh Hurley the scores 24- 14 to Llan. Llan then get another converted try brining the score to 31-14 with eight minutes of the first half left. Things look bad for the Wands, and then looked worse when following and incident between Llan and Wands, Dan was red carded and Llans number 4 was yellow carded. Anyone who does not know the Wands side must have though game over. Following one of the most passionate team talks by the Wands Coaching team the Wands game out for the second half blew Llan off the pitch with 41 unanswered points. “Backs and forwards combined to play some of the best youth rugby ever seen” (WRU Official) Jack Wilson open the second half account followed by Josh getting his second of the game which he converted. The skill levels and fitness levels of a depleted Wanderers Pack started to tell and the defensive skills of both backs and forwards turned the tide. Ciaran Driscoll score a try bring the scores to 31-31 it was game on, Ciaran followed this up within minutes to score a second followed by Matt Roberts and Lloyd Chalk who’s try was converted by Josh it was then the packs turn to score a couple of trys and the game was sealed by a blister 70 metre try from Rhys Allin converted by Josh Hurley- Final Score Llangennech 31 – 62 Wands

Wanderers now face Ruthin the North Champions who beat Tondu 23-19. This will be played on Sunday 22nd May 2011 at Crosskeys RFC KO 2.30pm

Wanderers Win- Wanderers Beat Bargoed Youth in the preliminary round of the RAF Leagues Champion of Championships 31-13- despite a slow and error strewn start which saw Bargoed take a commanding lead the Wanderers picked themselves up and played some exceptional second half rugby- again the pack proved too strong over the course of the game, creating opportunities for the backs to punish Bargoed. The boys now face Llangennech RFC (Scarlet’s Champions) on 14th May 2011 at Llanharan 2.30pm ko

10th May 2011. Wanderers to Play Bargoed in the Champion of Chamionships KO 7.00pm at Bedwas RFC.

Wanderers Retain their Tittle WEBB ELLIS Welsh Cup Champions 2010/11. The Wanderers are the only Youth side to retain the cup. In a tense game against a strong Newport Saracens side the Wanderers got off to a fantastic start with two trys from Captain Dan Crimmins, a further try from pacey winger Ioan Mortimer and three penalities and a conversion form Josh Hurley secured a great 26-11 win. Wanderers dominated the set piece and when we moved the ball wide looked dangerous. The Saracens fought to the end getting a try late into the second half- a massive thanks to the Boys, supporters, the WRU and Webb Ellis, but also to our sponsors for the year BRACE'S BREAD and the pre and post match sponsors Taylor total weed control, Concept Fire and Pontyclun Car Sales.

9th April 2011

Wanderers back at the Millennium Stadium to defend their title as holders of the Webb Ellis Welsh Youth Cup where they will meet Newport Sarcens from the Dragons Region.  Wanderers fought hard to beat a vastly improve St Joes in the one semi final- both clubs did the Blues Region proud playing open and fast rugby. It was a great team performance with backs and forwards linking really well- Rhys Allin opened the scoring with one of his scintillating trade mark tries but our front five and back row had the edge throughout the game in both lineouts with locks Ben Smith and Will Higgins out jumping their opponents and  the front row of Mike Savery, Peter Lloyd and Sam Dowell-Bennett having the edge in the scrums. The loose play of Jack Wilson, Rory Robinson and James Payne (Captain). The lead from the start but St Joes refused to give in much to their credit. The loss of Josh Hurley through a dead leg caused the Wands some problems having to move players around but the celebrations of the day were overshadowed by the sickening injury to full back Elliot Jones. The game was held up for nearly an hour while medical treatment was waited for.  Finally the game resumed with just 12 minutes to play- the injury clearly affected the Wanderers players the most who conceded a try to the Joes, but a last minute penalty converted by the sensational young centre Lloyd Chalk secured the win. Wands 36-26 St Joes.

Elliot had his operation yesterday and we all wish him and his Family a speedy recovery- lets go out and win this one for him

Featuring several Argentinian Internationals La Tablada began their European tour in France with an empatic win over the Paris based  side SCUF 35-10. Lifted by this Victory they arrived in Cardiff on Saturday to prepare for their targeted game against the Welsh Youth Champions GWRFC.  The ingredients were there for a compeling game.  The Drama started on Monday night when with just a few hours notice we had to find an alternative venue to the Memorial Ground.

Thanks to Maesteg RFC and a million phone calls  the fixture had to be moved from the Memorial Ground to Maesteg RFC at two hours’ notice- Massive thanks to Maesteg. The Argentinian side comprised of 4 internationals gave us one of the hardest and most physical games in recent time- our pack whilst smaller had the upper hand in the set piece- taking three scrums against the head. Great event played in a great spirit- well-done all. Man of the Match JB Bruzilia. Wands Win 24-20 with a try scored in the last minute by Wands Hooker Jo Page.

Following a very late night La Tablada left Cardiff to travel to London to take on one of the Capitals top sides Saracens on the 20th January 2011- In another close game La Tablada emerged victors winning by 17-12.

Of course we have asked Kev Tee from Rugby World to arrange a fixture away to Saracens.

NEWS:

BA League 1st October 2011

Wands 25-8 Pontyclun

This was the first game of the BA League this season for the Wands current league champions. The build up to the game was fraught with issues, sudden reversal of the fixture, referee injured 24 hours before KO, rooms booked out for parties, most of our Blues players being told they could not play at short notice and the hottest October day on record.

Everyone arrived early for the game and having had to make last minute adjustments to the starting squad the boys were in a confident mood- too confident, we failed to show a very fired up and hugely motivated Pontyclun the respect that they deserved. Within 5 minutes we were a try and penalty down. Shocked by the start we failed to settle into our game plan and played some really poor rugby culminating in a double red card incident  11 minutes before half time- following a driving maul the Pontyclun flanker and Wanderers prop got into an exchange which left the referee with no alternative other them to send them both off- this with a stern half time talk was the spur the boys needed and promising future star Jose Kabila took the game by the scruff of the next and smashed the defence with a number of his trade mark bullocking runs  . In the second half we settled more into our game plan scoring three try’s two conversions and two penalties . The last 20 minutes witnessed the difference in fitness between the two sides with wanderers enjoying the bulk of the procession.

A big thanks to the referee for allowing so many water breaks.

Man of the Match Jose Kabila.

Next Game Bath away

Training is on Monday and Wednesday each week 6.15pm till 8.00pm at Glamorgan Wanderers, new players are always welcome- If your coming to University in Cardiff or just moving to the area and want to play youth rugby to a high level come and join in.

The Wanderers youth Coaching staff have agreed to a number of joint training sessions with Cowbridge youth. The aim will be to enable players who enjoy rugby to play at all levels- those who are capable of playing at the highest level will be identified and supported whilst those who wish to develop their skills and also enjoy the more social side of rugby will also be given every opportunity. All players will benefit for top class coaching and sills development sessions where we can all learn from each other.

"Wanderers confirm Youth superiority

23 May 2011, 4:00 pm
By WRU
Glamorgan Wanderers Youth and Ruthin Youth contested the National Youth League Final on an excellent playing surface at Cross Key yesterday.
After successful seasons in their respective Regional Leagues these two teams had fought through the League and Play Off system involving more than 170 teams to play in the match.

The experienced Glamorgan Wanderers Youth team beat Ruthin 49-10 points to take the League title to add to the National Cup they won earlier in the month.

The score-line however does not reflect the effort, commitment and skill exhibited by a Ruthin team handicapped by the loss of some players and a long journey. Ruthin Youth were a credit to their club and the North Wales Youth League.

Glamorgan Wanderers started the match in fine form with a number of sweeping movements combining backs and forwards. They scored two early tries by Lloyd Chalk, converted by Josh Hurley to build a lead that they did not lose.

Ruthin exerted some pressure on the Wanderers as the half went on and gained reward with a try.

Before half time the Wanderers extended their lead when No.8 and captain Dan Crimmins powered his way over for his team's third try. With the successful conversion from outside half Hurley the Cardiff based team held a 21-5 lead at the interval.

In the second half the Wanderers pulled away from their northern rivals with two tries from speedy wing Rhys Allin, Crimmins again and second row Will Higgins. All of these tries were converted by Josh Hurley.

It was he, and scrum half JB Bruzulier who controlled the match for Glamorgan Wanderers and earned Hurley the Man of the Match award.

The spirit in the Ruthin team was epitomised by their second try in the last five minutes of the match by centre Jac Williams.

Glamorgan Wanderers Youth, who have developed under head coach Stuart Baird into a strong physical team with outstanding running skills, deserve the League title that eluded them last season.

As League and Cup Champions Glamorgan Wanderers Youth are the best Youth side in Wales in the 2010/2011 season."

Thank You

Sunday will see the end of a long and thrilling season for the youth- it has been a great team effort from all the backroom staff to the coaches players and parents- outstanding or in the words of Ugi head coach "Quality"  . In saying this a special thank you has to go Miff and Steve from Barry RFC, Will from Dinas RFC and Richard from Cowbridge RFC for their support and loan of players at critical times to help us meet a punishing fixture list. If your looking to play youth rugby and don't feel ready yet for the Wanderers please contact one of these local clubs who will help you develop your skills and abilities.

"National Youth League Play Off Final

19 May 2011, 1:02 pm
By WRU
The RAF Careers National Youth Final will be contested between Glamorgan Wanderers Youth and Ruthin Youth on Sunday 22nd May at Pandy Park, Cross Keys. (KO 2.30pm).
Last Saturday Ruthin Youth, the Champions of Gogledd Cymru, had a close encounter at Llanidloes with Tondu Youth, the Ospreys champions, before running out winners 23-19.

On the same day at Llanharan, Glamorgan Wanderers Youth, the Champions of the Blues Region, beat Llangennech Youth, the title holders of the Scarlets region in a thrilling match.

Llangennech Youth scored four excellent tries to establish a 31-19 points half time lead. The tide turned dramatically in the second half as Glamorgan Wanderers Youth, although reduced to 14 men following a sending off, played exhilarating rugby to score seven unanswered tries to claim a 60-31 victory.

This dramatic win followed another strong second half performance by the Wanderers Youth against the Dragons champions Bargoed Youth earlier in the week in the first Play Off match at Bedwas. Glamorgan Wanderers secured this match winning 31-13, after being 13-7 down at half time.

Earlier this month Glamorgan Wanderers Youth beat Newport Saracens Youth in the Webb Ellis Youth Cup and on Sunday will be looking to take the League and Cup double that eluded them last season.

To do so they will need to play well against the talented outfit from Ruthin Youth which after playing 18 League fixtures dominated the North Wales Premier Youth division this season"

Wanderers retain Youth cup
10 May 2011, 11:44 am
By WRU
In front of a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium Glamorgan Wanderers beat Newport Saracens 26-11 points to retain the Webb Ellis Youth Cup.
Glamorgan Wanderers took an early lead after pressure from their pack. No.8 and Captain Daniel Crimmins used his power to cross the Saracens line for two close range tries in the first 10 minutes of the match. It was a lead that the Wanderers never surrendered.

After looking overawed in those early minutes Newport Saracens fought back, in particular through good interplay amongst their speedy backs. The Wanderers defence held firm despite the Saracens pressure and the Newport club's only success came from two penalties kicked by Sam Bevan.

In the second half the kicking of Josh Hurley, both at goal and from hand, kept the Wanderers in the box seat. Hurley had a haul of three penalties and a conversion and earned himself the Man of the Match title.

Halfway through the second period an adventurous move from the Wanderers saw Ioan Mortimer cross for a try wide out. That try sealed the victory for the Ely based team.

It also spurred Newport Saracens to greater efforts. To their credit the Saracens launched a series of exciting attacks before gaining their reward with a try from James Casey.

Glamorgan Wanderers will have little time to celebrate their victory as they will start their campaign in the National Youth League Play Offs with a difficult fixture with Bargoed at Bedwas. The Wanderers will be trying to capture the RAF League title that eluded them last season.  WRU 10th May 2011
